False Pretense - Stand Together (Cpt)

FALSE PRETENCE - 'STAND TOGETHER' [INDIE]

"The continually-growing number of bands in South Africa is, as most people will agree, a good thing. But when the bands popping up are young (and by that I mean below the age of 20) that is a completely awesome thing. False Pretence are exactly that...awesome! The band is made up of ex-members of bands like War-On-Salt, Fail To Lose (RIP) and Blank Label (again RIP). They play very energetic live shows (anybody who has seen them live will agree) and what makes them so different to other bands is their attitude. Their first full-length release is a very DIY effort, and sometimes lacks in the whole production area, but otherwise it is an amazing CD. The Rancid 2000/Anti-Flag-influenced songs are very well put together and extremely well played. The lyrics are very thought provoking and once you read them (they are all nicely included in the CD cover) you will know why I said their attitude separates them from the rest of the pack. There are 10 tracks on 'Stand Together', and the album opens with the song 'Selfishness And Greed', which sets the tone for the rest of the time you will spend listening to the boys ripping through their songs. About one minute into 'Selfishness And Greed', Neil (their bassist) goes into a ripping bass solo - very much akin to the ones pulled off by Rancid's Matt Freeman. Some of my favourite tracks are 'Leader of the Pack', 'Cradle of Democracy' and 'Monday Morning', which is about the many people who live and sleep on our streets. The CD was recorded at Kreef Records in Cape Town and it will only cost you R10 to get your hands on a copy - you will have to pay a bit of postage if you don't live in CT. Overall this is one kick ass CD and anybody (even if you don't like punk) should give it a listen."

Mental Junto - Punk from Cape Town

This is a band i got into when i found a disc of theirs at my friend Jeremy's place during a ContraMundi jam. I never got to go to a show of theirs and don't really know anything about them. So i thought id ask Jeremy. I sent him a message saying:
"Hey Jem. Can you send me some info on that old Cape Town band "Mental Junto"? Just what you remember? I have their one album and i want to post it on my blog. I need something to say though. So if you have time can you write me something?

His reply was:
"Don't think i have much info hey. I think their drummer died... Dunno how... They were very loud !"

So yeah...

Hopefully somebody will read this when they have time and help us out. (eg. Greg ^_^)

This song "Greater good" sounds like Alain Marthezé (from Two Weeks Old, Sleeping At The Popes and Enmity) is doing back up screams?

TDKM - Hardcore / Punk / Thrash (cpt)

A group of friends who in mid 2006 decided to start a band. They all came from previous punk bands, and when the Cape Town scene suddenly died were the only ones around who felt the need to carry it on in some way. They went through a series of name changes, from Dead Rabbits to Skum, and finally to TDKM. They were still experimenting musically, and trying to find their feet with a sound when the band came to an end.

"We've been compared to alotta bands, some of the distro reviews are interesting to say the least, and there is a tradgic rumour going around that we're a grindcore band. Listen to our songs and decide for yourself."

They had a 7" released on Broederkont Records

A.W.O.L - Hardcore / Punk (JOZI)

A.W.O.L. (Absent without leave.) were a 4 member band from Johannesburg, ZA
They played hard hitting Chaos/80s Hardcore Punk and built up quite a following.
They recorded one album named 'another pawn please' and were beginning work on a second album in 2009 when the band came to an end due to Jonathan Way's suicide. Jonathan Way (D-Beat johnny) was an amazing artist and musician and above all a kid with a really big heart. This Blog is dedicated to him.

Touched By Nausea (TBN) - D-Beat from JHB ? :P

Touched By Nausea is a 6 piece hardcore punk/crust band from Roodepoort, JHB. Started in February 2005.
Bands they have shared a stage with include Solitary Confinement, AWOL, Red Brigade, Light Brigade, Skelm Helm, Hasten The Storm, The Hazards, TDKM, Gross Misconduct, Oi!Rothol, Dean & The Deadbeats, Killer Monsters, Insek, Scum Chums, and lots of Metal/Screamo bands...

TBN started as a 5 piece from 2005 to 2007. From 2007 to present, Rozanne (dual vocalist of Skelm Helm) did vocals in Brian's year absence in Europe. With Brian's return in 2008, TBN is now a 6 piece band with dual vocals. They have also adopted a new sound with the new lineup.

'Our message is basically to aware people of things that go on around them that they might not be aware of already (we don't know everything like other bands and people do)' 'Our AntiCopyright message is that we dont mind our music being copied and spread. We dont want limitations by major record labels who copyright bands. We want to cut out the middleman and take commercialism out of punk. We do feel that bands have their own creativity and we dont agree in copying ideas, lyrics, riffs etc. Just from the music sense, it can be copied.'- TBN
